The Copper Water Bottle

Copper water bottle

Our copper water bottles are made from 100% pure food-safe copper. We don’t use any other metals, alloys or lining.

Can I get too much copper if I drink from my copper water bottle all the time?

The concept of storing water in copper vessels arose centuries ago and has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine. However, it is increasingly gaining attention from the mainstream scientific community. In several recent scientific studies, it was determined not only that water stored in a copper vessel can have attractive health benefits, but also that there is no risk of getting too much copper using that method.

In particular, recent studies note that the World Health Organization has concluded that it is safe for the body to consume up to 2mg of copper per litre of water. Significantly, research shows that the water stored in the copper vessel for several hours absorbed less than 1/20th of that amount of copper, very far below safe limits.

What does Ayurveda recommend?

To maximise the benefits of copper, Ayurveda recommends storing water in a copper vessel for about 8 hours before consumption. The best way to do this is to fill the vessel with water at night, let it rest by your bedside so the water can get fully ionized and then consume the water the next morning.

Although there are numerous benefits, you don’t need to drink water from a copper vessels all day long. If you have a copper water bottle, you can choose to carry it all day and re-fill it regularly. This is not harmful and the copper bottle will continue to keep your water fresh and free of bacteria.

Ayurveda also recommends a gap of 1-2 weeks after every three months of using the copper vessel.

Are your copper water bottles handmade?

Yes, all of our copper water bottles are handmade by skilled artisans using traditional methods. As a result, every bottle will be unique and may have some imperfections which add to the character of the piece.

Why are your copper water bottles hammered?

The copper water bottles are hammered by hand for two important reasons: to create a gorgeous aesthetic, and to increase the surface area of copper on the inside of the copper water bottle which makes contact with the water stored in it. The greater the physical contact between the water and the copper, the greater the health benefits for you.

What are the benefits of copper? What does copper do for the body?

Great question! Please check out our latest blog post on the twelve benefits of copper.

Can my copper water bottle create alkaline water?

Yes! Storing water in your copper water bottle is a great way to make natural alkaline water. In fact, our copper water bottles are essentially natural alkaline water bottles. Drinking alkaline water can be a great way to support a healthy lifestyle.

What type of water should I use in my copper water bottle?

You can use any type of water in your copper water bottle, including tap water, water that has been passed through a filter, or even bottled water. You will probably notice the greatest difference with tap water, which is generally the least alkaline and in the need of the most care. Although tap water is generally fine in most first-world countries, you may wish to consider filtering the water before pouring it into your copper water bottle.

Do you make double-walled or insulated copper bottles?

We specifically chose not to make double-walled or insulated copper bottles.

A double-walled or insulated bottle is used to keep water cold or hot. Ayurveda recommends drinking lukewarm water rather than cold water as doing so can literally douse the digestive fire that builds up in our bodies. Drinking cold water can also slow down the enzymes in our gut, which can prevent our bodies from properly digesting food, in turn increasing the amount of toxins in our bodies.

In addition, drinking cold water can cause a contraction of blood vessels, which can further increase the likelihood that toxins will remain inside your body rather than being excreted through your lymphatic system.

Conversely, drinking room temperature or lukewarm water supports the lymphatic system, which means that, over time, more toxins will be expelled from the body. In particular, drinking room temperature or lukewarm water flushes the lymphatic system, helps soften hardened tissues, dilates, cleans and hydrated deep issues, and heals and repair the digestive system.

While it is fine to fill your copper water bottle with warm water, we recommend against filling it with hot or boiling water, as this can reduce the useful life of your bottle.

In addition, double-walled copper bottles can be prone to very significant problems. Copper is a very soft metal, and, based on construction methods used to make copper bottles, water stored in double-walled bottles will eventually seep in between the two walls and, unbeknownst to you, lead to the formation of mold which can be very detrimental to your health. We specifically choose to produce our bottles with a single wall to avoid that problem.

Can drinking from a copper water bottle cure my copper deficiency?

For those with a copper deficiency, drinking water from a copper water bottle can  definitely help mitigate the deficiency. However, if you are suffering from a copper deficiency you should be sure to also consult your health practitioner to ensure you're making other positive changes needed to resolve your health issues.

Should I clean my copper water bottle before using it for the first time?

We recommend washing the inside with warm water and a drop of liquid soap, and giving it a good scrub with a dish brush before filling it up with drinking water for the first time.

Is the copper bottle leak-free?

Each of our copper water bottles is capped with a leak-proof cap. You can throw this bottle into your favorite bag with confidence that it will stay water-tight!

What does water stored in a copper bottle taste like?

It tastes great – fresh, clean and pure! Although some people expect the water to taste metallic, it does not. Water stored in a copper bottle will absorb the beneficial health qualities of copper, but it doesn't absorb enough copper to dramatically change the taste of the water. You may detect a slight hint of copper if your tongue touches the bottle as you drink from it.

Can I use lemon or other fruit with my copper bottle?

There are plenty of benefits of drinking lemon water and other infused water and so it's a great idea to combine those benefits with the benefits of water stored in a copper water bottle. To get the greatest health benefits, try to combine water from your copper water bottle with lemon slices or lemon juice in a cup. Copper can react with certain acids, including citric acid, so it's best to only use water in your copper water bottle.

Can I use coffee, tea, juice or sparkling water in my copper bottle?

Because copper can react with acidic liquids (anything with a pH of less than 7), we recommend only using water in your copper water bottle.

Can I use essential oils with my copper water bottle?

While we don't recommend adding essential oils directing into your copper water bottle, you can certainly add essential oils to your copper-charged water in a separate container.

How do I polish and clean my copper bottle?

As the copper water bottle is made of 100% pure copper, it will naturally patina over time. Many of our customers like having the exterior of their bottles age gracefully into a beautiful copper patina. However, if you prefer the shine of copper, the patina is easy to remove. Simply sprinkle a pinch of salt on a slice of lemon, allow the salt to dissolve, and then gently rub it on the surface of your bottle. The lemon and salt will form a mixture that will naturally remove the patina and restore the copper’s shine. Once done, rinse with water and dry well.

The inside of the copper water bottle will also patina, but this has no effect on the quality of the water stored inside the bottle. We recommend cleaning the inside of your bottle every now and then with warm water and a drop of liquid soap, and then rinsing it well. However, be sure to never wash your copper water bottle in a dishwasher.
